Welcome

Motet Choir is the flagship choral ensemble of the University of Chicago. We are a mixed choir of about 35 singers from the College under the direction of Dr. James Kallembach, the Director of Choral Activities at the University.

We draw on a strong grounding in the music of the Renaissance to form the foundation for a distinctive approach to a cappella masterpieces of all cultures and time periods. Beyond the fundamentals—a pure tone, clearly shaped lines, and nuanced tuning—we combine a strong sense of ensemble with a high level of musical self-reliance. Our artistry is integrated into a quintessentially UChicago understanding of history, culture, language, and structure.

Motet Choir has a particular commitment to engaging with the work of living and recent composers, including new commissions. In the last few seasons, Motet Choir has given premières of works by such composers as James MacMillan, Shulamit Ran, Sven-David Sandström, William Bolcom, Robert Kyr, and Marta Ptaszynska.

Additionally, Motet Choir is the ensemble of choice for special projects and choral/orchestral performances at the University. We participate in the annual performance of Händel's Messiah and sing for convocations and other University events.

We invite you to learn more about Motet Choir, our members, and our current goings-on (including our upcoming tour of the east coast) throughout this website. To contact the choir, e-mail choirs@uchicago.edu.
