Motet Choir is a highly selective ensemble open to University of Chicago students by audition only.

Auditions are held during Orientation Week at the beginning of Autumn Quarter through the unified audition process for Music Department ensembles. The audition lasts about 10 minutes. You will be asked to vocalize across your range, to match specific pitches and vowels, and to sightread a few short phrases. While a prepared piece is not required for vocal auditions, candidates for Motet Choir would be well served to also bring a short excerpt (16-32 measures) from a solo piece. Ordinarily, all singers are auditioned at the beginning of fall quarter and asked to commit for the full academic year, though singers in special circumstances may always contact the director.

Once selected, singers are responsible for the very full rehearsal and performance schedule, as well as sectionals, retreat, tour, and individual vocal lessons/coaching sessions. Contact Dr. James Kallembach for more details. On a lighter note, Motet Choir tends to be a very tight-knit bunch, and there are many outings, traditions, and social events, organized and impromptu, throughout the year.
